My Morning Commute, for Sanity

Due to recent travelling, I haven’t done much riding.  It was really starting to get to me.

I did ride on Sunday with Tim.  I’ll write about that and share some pictures soon.

I intended to ride to work yesterday.  I headed out the door on my LHT shortly before 7:00 am and made it less than two miles before my chain broke.  Discouraged, I called my wife to come get me, and changed into work clothes, and drove.

In addition to getting a new chain for the bike, I made a second, spur of the moment, purchase at another bike shop.  I bought a Brooks Professional saddle to replace my sagging Brooks B-17.

I hit the road this morning at 6:30 am, and took the long way through Utica to get to work.  I stopped at a coffee shop along the way.  It was nearly 22 miles one-way.

The hot weather has passed.  It was about 63 degrees when I left the house.  It was very comfortable weather with clear skies.  I couldn’t have asked for a better commute to work.  I may stay sane after all.

  1. Thanks!

Yep, I don’t want to have to keep buying more saddles, so I’ll do better to keep this one dry.

I worked late last night to update a server after hours. The non-rush-hour ride in the dark was quite pleasant, other than a woman on a cell phone who nearly rear-ended me about 1/2 mile from home.

  2. I’m looking forward to hearing how the Brooks Professional works out for you. I think I still might be able to save my Brooks, although I’m guessing its pants-staining problem won’t go away, which makes its utility a little limited …

  3. Both of you need to find the RBW article out of a recent Reader about using dense foam to re-support a Brooks. As for discoloration, my only comment is that for general biking I use junky shorts or pants, and rarely real work clothes when riding.

  4. I still have my black B-17, and yes, it stained a pair of jeans when I rode in wet weather (bad idea wearing jeans anyway).

I’m hoping the honey colored saddle won’t stain anything, but I usually wear black shorts, so it shouldn’t be too noticeable.

I’ve ridden about 40 miles on the new saddle. I still need to tweak it a bit, but it’s more comfortable than the stock WTB saddle that came with the bike.

It’s sitting on top of the Velo Orange seatpost, but I think I need to adjust fore-aft a little more.
