Too Cold

I still don’t enjoy commuting in cold weather.  Riding with others in the cold is much more enjoyable than my 16 mile slog to work with temperatures in the teens.

I did ride to work yesterday (Monday), but I was quite cold.  I did have chemical hand and foot warmers, but I was still too cold.  I ended up getting a ride home.

I drove today, and I’m in a bit of a mental funk because of it.

Looking at the weather forecast is just depressing.  Snow makes riding hazardous.  Frigid temperatures make me want to stay indoors, or in the heated car.  It may be a while before I ride to work again.

  1. me too. rode yesterday. “grin-n-bear it”, but i was way undermotivated to face another cold day again. may try tomorrow though. stir-crazy in house otherwise.

  2. I hate winter, too. I walk for my exercise, and I am always afraid of falling and breaking my neck, or at least a wrist. The actual cold doesn’t bother me as much as the snow and ice. Yuck. But, time goes fast and spring will be here before we know it!

  3. Maybe you can find a way to make it fun again. I really don’t mind the cold that much, in fact my commutes have been fun/pleasant. But my commute is also a lot shorter than yours. And the longer rides I’ve done lately were mountain biking, where it’s easier to keep warm (less wind).

If you feel cold while you’re riding, maybe you need to work on getting your layers figured out. If you do it right, you can be fairly comfortable.

On the other hand, maybe I’m just a freak who doesn’t mind the cold.

  4. I’ll cheerfully ride throughout the winter, but my commute is only about two miles. Monday was a rough day, since I wasn’t as prepared for the cold as I should have been.

16 miles is a long way to go in the serious cold.

  5. I plan to move into Louisville (hopefully inside the I-264 loop) in the future. Then I won’t need a car unless traveling.

My wife and I have two vehicles. We could lower that number to one, save on gas, parking, insurance, and my mental health.

We’ve also considered moving someplace warmer. 🙂
