300 miles may not seem like a lot, but it's good to see your miles creeping back up (well, and sometimes bolting -- you added 76 miles from February to March and 60 miles from March to April!). It's been good to see you out on rides again, as well.

Mark, you are ahead of me for the month of May. I've got about 27 miles.

I've always told people I ride 5000 miles a year, but I'm going to have to get busy to do that this year.

Take care, and keep the rubber side down.

Hi David good to read you did the 30 days of biking and are back on the bike/ My April was somewhat lacking in cycling but as they say onwards and upwards . Roll on May I have done 51 miles so far in May so if I keep this up daily I should average just short of 7000 miles for the year ha ha

Clipless pedals on a longer commute do help--my ride to work is roughly thirteen miles. For a mile or two, yeah, it seems more sensible to wear whatever shoes I have on when I walk out to the garage, and my "mile or two" bike has Ergon pedals on it (I can be wearing Vibram Five-Finger shoes and still feel good on those big pedals!).

If I'm pulling much weight in a trailer, I'll go for the spud shoes, regardless of distance.

I've waffled back-and-forth on the clipless. I've had them for a few years, but I take them off in the winter so I can wear boots, then sometimes I don't put them back on.

I'm actually enjoying using them right now, but it's all short rides. I'd probably get sore feet again on a long ride.

I might be able to haul it on the 'bent, and will try if necessary.

The sleeping bag and sleeping pad would have to bungied on top.

Explain to me why you don't think you can haul it all on the bent? You have the two biggest panniers I can think of. More space than my front and rear bags combined. I'm pretty sure my luggage for 2 months in Europe was smaller.

I've had three days with less than a mile this month. Those are days that I wouldn't have ridden except for the 30 Days Of Biking challenge.

You're right though. Sometimes those few minutes are the best part of the day. I should continue this beyond the end of the month.

Always enjoy the posts, but today's comment about day 14 was actually the most inspiring. Bravo for getting out for the half-mile ride! Normally, I'm a strong proponent of the short ride, but lately, I seem to have forgotten the value. Thanks for the shove back to sanity.

It is great to be back. I no longer have an upright bike good for long distance or hills. I'll either have to ride the recumbent for those rides, or plan another bike... once I take care of other obligations.

That said, the single-speed had been a great bike around town.

You definitely got some cool shots. I particularly like the one where the road meets the sky. Really wish I had been able to make it.

Thanks guys. This was my first real ride using the iPhone as a camera. You can see my finger in view on what would otherwise be the best of the pictures. Doh!

I didn't have a lot of time to take pictures considering I was busy trying to catch up constantly. I *am* really out of shape. :(

Ah, the joys of the invigorating 40-miler. Good to hear. I hope you'll report back on how the exercise and stretching program works. I'm not a physician, but my hunch is that many of us are too quick to yield to unnecessary surgery and perpetual medication...when we could choose to live differently. Best wishes.

Really nice snowy pictures. I was hoping to get to do some nice winter photography, but this winter hasn't yielded many opportunities.

Sorry to hear about the prognosis regarding your neck. I hope you find something that works. Dave G has had some kind of neck surgery, you should talk to him and see if he has any insight.

As you've described it, I think I might know someone who has gone through the surgery (or something similar). He's my former riding partner back when I lived in Houston, and we continue to stay in contact occasionally. If you'd like for me to arrange an interview to help you make a decision, I can do it. Just let me know.

Congrats on a great trip! I'm jonesing for the chance to get out this spring too. I'd also second barturtle's comment on your camping setup. even with my cheap gear (big tent, not super-expensive 3-season bag, etc...) I'm able to cram everything aside from my camera equipment into a set of t-28's and the rack platform. Especially if there's a bunch of guys going -- divide and conquer to bring everything you need...

With the size of the Arkel GT54s you have, it should be no problem to carry everything you need for a S24O, though it may require upgrading your equipment with an eye towards smaller, lighter gear. Solo tent, ultralight bag and inflatable sleeping pad would all be a good start.

Some careful shopping and waiting to catch the right deal should net those three for under $150. My 0F bag, tent and pad put me right at 10lbs. My 30F bag, bivy and pad drop that to 5lbs.

The iPhone is a tool and as such is only effective if used as intended. In essence it can't make your choices for you, only track the decisions you make. Take care of yourself please!

There are quite a few bicycle gearing calculators that are fun to play with. The one I use for android is simply called Bicycle Calculator, but there are some for iphone too. A quick search should bring them up for you.

Yes, discipline is the answer. I'm hoping the iPhone app will guide me though.

I had no discipline at last night's Car-Free Happy Hour, but I did have fun, and probably gained 3lbs.

"Could the iPhone be the tool I need to do this?"

Unfortunately, the only tool I find effective is discipline.

Fortunately, discipline is has other, unanticipated, rewards as well.

My "off the bike" didn't last. I find the bus to be annoying enough that I'd rather ride my bike and deal with the pain, at least on days where the pain is bearable. I did okay today on the single-speed.
